Well hello Gamernation. In light of episode 103 of the Order 66 Podcast titled - "Play that funky music PROXY" it has got me anxious to start creating intricate sound tracks for my current Saga game. My main problem, I have a ton of Star Wars soundtracks from all the movies and games and what not, it would literally take hours upon hours to listen to them all and come up with lists of what music would be good for what situation. I thought it would be fun to create a thread where we can pool all our resources together and share music knowledge to all of the gamernation. I thought we could list what songs we like and what scenario it would best be used for. I thought we could then break it down into categories and eventually create multiple play lists and compile it all in a file to share with the gamernation. The categories I had in mind are as followed, feel free to come up with your own categories if you deem it necessary. It is important to note that we don't intend on sharing MP3s or anything, just lists of songs from certain soundtracks by name and track number in a category that you feel fits the song well in a Saga campaign. The endgame will hopefully be a long list of songs you can create a playlist with and shuffle through as the game progresses so you are not subjected to Duel of the Fates on repeat for every Jedi vs Sith encounter.

Ambient Music - music to play in the background quietly as you roleplay and roll dice. I have found that the Republic Commando soundtrack has really good ambient music as an example, for instance Track 3 titled The Egg Room has this creepy vibe from it like something can happen at any moment while it plays. Ambient music is usually quiet and sets a certain mood depending on what is happening in game whether it be a creepy forest on Felucia or bustling metropolis on Coruscant. It is generally flat and doesn't draw too much attention and can generally be put on repeat without it getting grating. I would divide ambient music up in sub categories like Forest, Desert, City etc.

Cantina Music - everyone knows that every player will eventually find themselves in a cantina, and while the original Cantina Band from mos eisley is iconic, it can get annoying if every cantina in the galaxy plays the same song! For this I would choose strictly instrumental and upbeat music in the spirit of the Mos Eisley Cantina song. A good alternative I found on the KOTOR 2 soundtrack called Iziz Cantina, though is is fairly short at 30 seconds it just embodies my idea of cantina music paying homage to the sound of the mos eisley song to give you a general idea of what kind of music would work well in a cantina setting. I would consider this a sub category of ambient music for sure.

Battle Music - music to play when you engage an enemy in combat. This type of music is usually high powered and exciting drawing the players into a combat encounter as if they were watching it transpire in a star wars film. Music has always been important in setting the tone for battles. Think the music during the Battle of Hoth and the music during the Battle of Endor.

Epic Boss Music - music to play when your players engage the BBEG in combat. Think Duel of the Fates when Obi Wan and Qui Gon battle Darth Maul on Naboo. When Anikan battles Obi Wan on Mustafar. This music is generally fast pace and has a certain epic quality to them, chanting is usually a plus lol. Think Kingdom Hearts when you think to yourself, I wonder what the Platinum ???? battle in the arena is. You click on it to see Sephiroth and he kicks the crap out of you all to the tune of One Winged Angel, doesn't matter that he beat the crap out of you, because of the song it was so awesome the memory stays with you forever!

This isn't limited to just Star Wars soundtracks either, if there is a different soundtrack with a song you can recommend for each category feel free, just make sure to site the track number, title, and soundtrack it is from so people know where to look.

I'll get the ball rolling.

Epic Battle Music

Metroid Prime 3: Corruption - Track 24 - Rundas Battle
Metroid Prime 3: Corruption - Track 43 - Dark Samus
Doctor Who Series 3 - Track 7 - Evolution of the Daleks
God of War OST - Track 24 - Minotaur Boss Battle
Mario Galaxy OST - Track 19 - Nemesis King Koopa
Star Wars Phantom Menace - Track 2 - Duel of the Fates
Star Wars Revenge of the Sith - Track 3 - Battle of the Heroes

Those are just a few suggestions for now. I will post more up when I have more time to go through my music collection.

That is true the music in KOTOR is quite epic, it just goes to show how well composed the music in those games are that every song strikes an epic chord in your heart. I have been listening to my music collection non stop, hopefully I will have a more detailed list soon enough!

This is where my games fall down. I've tried to use music but the amount of work required to find the right music has prevented me. Another member of our group is running the next campaign so I plan to spend the intervening months putting some stuff together for my next one. I will watch this thread with great interest and contribute my own if this thread still exists.

Assuming you have KOTOR for the PC, here is how to get playable music from it.

1. Open up C:\Program Files\LucasArts\SWKotOR\streamsounds
2. The files that start out "mus_" are the ones you want. Grab them and copy them somewhere safe.
3. They are uniquely compressed .wav files that most programs will choke on, but here is the trick. Rename them from .wav to .mp3. Windows media player still won't like them but Winamp and iTunes do just fine playing them. Make a playlist with the songs you want and go to town. (Or, 2 playlists for calm and battle scenes. The files are conveniently labeled either "mus_bat_" for battle music and "mus_area_" for ambient music.)
